Holiday Travel Tips

·    Leave a day earlier or later to avoid high traffic days. Traveling on the actual holiday is also a good way to avoid traffic.

·    Don't wrap holiday gifts, as airlines will open them for inspection. Wrap them when you arrive at your destination or ship them ahead of time. You can also shop by catalog/Internet and have gifts shipped directly to your destination.

·    Check weather and road conditions before you leave.

·    Pack an emergency roadside kit in your trunk. Carry jumper cables, a reflective warning triangle, an approved gas can, a tire puncture repair kit, some Q20 lubricant spray, a flashlight, first aid kit and a blanket.

·    Suspend your mail and newspaper delivery while you're away, so they don’t pile up and alert would-be thieves that you are not at home.

·    Unplug all electronic items or use a surge protector. Unhook the phone line from your computer modem and disconnect the automatic garage door opener so it can’t accidentally open.

·    Make sure door and window locks work properly and check smoke detectors.

·    Carry written information about medical conditions/allergies in case you’re unable to give instructions yourself.

·    Stop every few hours to stretch your legs and do some physical activity to help improve blood circulation.

·    Keep credit card account numbers and banks’ toll-free numbers in a safe place while traveling (not in your wallet or purse) and leave a copy with someone at home. Immediately cancel cards if lost or stolen and contact the following agencies to file a fraud alert report – Equifax (800-525-6285), Experian (formerly TRW 800-301-7195), Trans Union (800-680-7289) and Social Security Administration Fraud Line (800-269-0271).

On the Road Again – Traveling with Your Laptop

by Mary Beth Jerry, Director of Non-credit Computer and Technology Programs

FBI statistics claim that laptop theft is second only to identity theft in frequency. An estimated 2 million laptops are reported stolen and that doesn't include the thousands that are lost or left behind in airports, motels and conference centers. If you are traveling with your laptop for business or vacation, here are some suggestions for keeping both your computer and your important data safe.

Before you go, do a reality check – do you really need to take the computer? It may be safest to leave it home if you only need occasional access that could be done at an Internet café, public library or some other facility at your destination.

If you must take it, click here and consider these steps as preparation…
